Unit 22 and 72: Researching Games

Explanation:
Throughout this assignment, I will be researching a variety of topics that revolve around gaming that include different game genres and types. Also, this would include how I would develop a visual style for a game as well as the concept of the game.

The impact of computer games on society:
Within the gaming industry, it comes with many advantages as well as disadvantages and I believe that this has had a massive impact on the society. Some people say that playing games is bad for your health and they can be right and also wrong because playing games can help with certain things like:

Hand-eye Co-ordination:
It has been proven that surgeons who play games have become more skilled after playing games for a long period of time. There are other games that can simulate a real world experience such as sport games for example; Wii Sports on the Nintendo Wii. The reason for this is because it simulates most sports that range from bowling, baseball, tennis and more. There are more advanced simulation games for driving vehicles and flying planes and this can be used by instructors to teach them how to fly in some sense as well as getting used to all the gear.

Brain training:
I see this as a positive side to the gaming industry because there are plenty of games out there that are designed to keep the brain in shape with multiple exercises that can be done 20 minutes each day. A perfect example for this is Lumosity. The reason for this example is because this application trains your brain with three daily exercises that change each day.

Thinking and strategy skills:
This can be seen as a positive factor to the gaming industry because it can help people that play games with their development in such a way. Games that require management for example; FIFA and Football Manager keep you alert especially with the thinking and planning to ensure you get a better result and success over-time. Games like these can help those who may suffer with time management difficulties.

Future impact:

Since games have come around, they have massively impacted the society in both a positive way and a negative way. Playing games allows people to develop theoretical and practical skills by practising in a virtual environment.

Impact on mainstream application development:
Looking back on very early computer operating systems, they were difficult to operate because they were text based and this required users to know how to use it. The development of games wasn't so easy back when it first came around and as time has moved, the development of games has become easier which is because of newer operating systems, software and hardware.

After explaining the positive side to gaming thoroughly, I will now explain the negative side of gaming thoroughly.
_____________________________________________________________________________

Excessive playing time:
Gaming can have a negative impact on society as well as having a positive impact. Excessive gaming has become an issue of today because it can lead to health problems in the future. It also affects the persons sleeping pattern, how they perform in education as well as in the work place. There have been extreme cases where students haven’t been going to school due to the fact they’ve either not had much sleep or because they want to play games all day.

Social isolation:
This is really an issue of today because people don’t really socialise anymore. It is the same with social media and it has massively impacted the society in a negative way. This can affect their social development as well as their intellectual development because they aren’t communicating with another human being but they are communicating over VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). People who play games value their online friends more than the friends they know in person.

The cost:
The cost of gaming has increased over the years making it a multi-billion dollar industry. To the average gamer, the cost is always rising. Gaming is okay to a certain extent but when it becomes excessive and wanting the newest release of a game all the time, that’s where it turns into a problem. Especially if they can’t afford the game or the parents can’t afford the game. The cost doesn't just mean the cost of the games, it means the cost of electricity which isn't cheap especially if you’re gaming for long periods of time each day. The cost does not just revolve around the cost of the games, it revolves around the cost of the platform you’re buying the game for. The cost of the PS4 (£290) from Amazon, Xbox One (£279) from Amazon and decent size TV as well which can cost around £300+ from manufacturers such as PC World, Curry’s and even Amazon.

Separation from reality:
It is so easy for an individual to become so attached to a game that they actually believe that they belong in the game as a character. For some, it may be an entertaining experience and for others, it can have a negative effect. A few of these examples range from committing murders like they have seen them in a game they enjoy playing to having violent outbursts when they aren't playing the game. The gamer becomes more involved with the game and removed from the real world. Games can make the people that play them forget about the real world and beating game is the only thing important to that person.

Education:
Playing games excessively can affect the education of the person because if they aren't playing the game whilst in education, it can create withdrawal symptoms and may lead to becoming anti-social and not wanting to go to school. Playing strategy and brain training games come with their own advantages and not so much disadvantages. There are certainly educational benefits when it comes to gaming and in the long run, they could get paid for playing games and even testing new games. There have been other studies that have been done and they show that people drop out of college and they are left with a surprise debt that they may not be able to clear easily.

The psychological effects of gaming:

Use of sound:
When it comes to playing video games, the sound is one of the vital elements that makes the game, the game because without the sound, it's dull and it can't really express its full potential for what it was released for. Games have their own individual sound control panel where you can adjust the volumes for the elements in the game like sound effects, the music, voices / subtitles and so on. Playing a game with no sound can be difficult depending on what game it is and whether if the sound is required. For example; if you were playing a driving game, you could initially turn all of the sounds off and play without it but it makes the game a bit boring and the concentration span decreases massively. When a game is in the development process, there will be sounds made for the game that change when the environment changes.

High score listings:
In earlier games like arcade games, high score ratings were used to define that the person had a better score than anyone else. The person having the better score than anyone else makes them think and act differently. Since the newer platforms have been released, it has changed the high score listings because it depends on what trophies the person has to be even entered on to the high score list.

Competitive games:
Games that are competitive can have a negative impact on the person as they will want to achieve the best possible score in the game and if they can't reach that point in the game, it turns their behaviour scale upside down and make them violent at the same time. This has been proved by many research studies.

Peer pressure:
This is something that is relevant, especially in the world of teenage gamers that are in need of having the latest and greatest consoles and games. In order for game makers to maximize their sales, they release the games around Christmas time.

Fun:
Not all people will play a game to it's full potential that it was released for, they will just play for fun and the level of enjoyment and satisfaction is achieved. Playing games can help people escape the reality and step into a virtual reality where nothing matters.

Educational value:
Through basic research, it has revealed that people playing video games has helped increase their language / reading skills, Maths skills and as well as their social skills. Video games have been used to train children that have either an attention deficit disorder and those that are handicapped.

Expectations:
When playing games, gamers will always have something to say about a game or they will want more from that game. Technology is advancing every second and since then, games have been getting better and better but the player still wants more. It's like a never ending demand. I 100% understand that gamers want immediate feedback during the gameplay.

Levelling:
When a person is playing the game, they want to feel rewarded each time they do something good or better than the objectives said. Not only that it makes the person feel more rewarded, they become more immersed in the gameplay when they have short-term and long-term challenges.

Conclusion:
Overall, the society that we live in, the individuals we live with are all affected by the games we play on a day to day basis. Research shows that when people don't play games obsessively, the positive things outweigh the negative things and there is only a small percentage of people that play games let them have such a negative impact on their well-being.

Different game genres:

FPS:
FPS stands for First Person Shooter. This means that you play the game from the character(s) perspective. This genre generally doesn't collide with other genres and there are many FPS games out there such as the Battlefield series, Call of Duty series, Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike: Source, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Destiny and the list goes on. Grand Theft Auto 5 later released this feature for the next generation consoles; Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

My chosen example is Battlefield 3 and the reason for that being is because it’s a well-known game and it’s also a good example of a First Person Shooter game. The story of Battlefield 3 is set back in 2014 and it consists of events that happen over nine months that happen in different countries such as Paris (France), New York City (New York). It mainly takes place in the Iran and Iraq region as well as the Azerbaijani border. The game has three modes; Story Mode, Co-op (Co-operative) and Online. The game uses the Frostbite 2 Game Engine.

Another example of a first person shooter game is Counter Strike: Global Offensive and the reason of the choice of this game is because it’s a popular game played by different parts of the world. The game has both an offline and online mode. The offline mode is used for practising and playing against bots whereas the online mode is for playing with other people of the world. The online mode of the game has two teams; CT (Counter-Terrorist) and T (Terrorist). The Counter-Terrorist team have to go around the map and kill the Terrorist team and defuse the bombs that the Terrorist team have planted. For the Terrorist team, they have to plant the bombs without being detected by the Counter-Terrorist team. Throughout the game, you can purchase and trade weapons with other people of the Steam community.

TPS:
TPS stands for Third Person Shooter. This means that you play the game from exterior view (Camera attached from behind). There are many examples of Third Person Shooter games such as the Grand Theft Auto series, Red Dead Redemption, Saints Row series, Max Payne series and the list goes on. Some Third Person Shooter games can be related to First Person Shooter games.

My chosen example is Grand Theft Auto V and the reason for that being is because it has been a popular game since its release back 2013. The game featured a third person mode until last year when Rockstar re-released the game to the newer generation consoles; Xbox One and PlayStation 4 so they could alternate between first person and third person mode. The current platforms for the game are; PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The game features two mode; Story Mode and Online. The story mode is set in Los Santos and the missions are divided between three characters; Michael, Trevor and Franklin. Each player has their own mini-missions as well as their own special abilities that can be used throughout playing the game. The game uses the RAGE Engine (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine).

Another example of a third person shooter is Saints Row IV and the reason for the choice of the game is because the game received good ratings from when it was released. The game is an open that has a great story line and the graphics are also great. This game is also available on the following platforms; Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The game uses the Havok Physics Engine.

Racing:
When a racing game is developed it usually comes with a first person and a third person mode that can be switched throughout the game by pressing a button. There are many different racing games such as Need for Speed, Mario Kart, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Burnout Paradise and the list goes on.

My chosen example is Need for Speed: The Run because it’s a good example of a racing game. The game was popular when it was first released back in 2011 on the platforms; Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo 3DS, and since then, the popularity of the game has decreased quite significantly. The game doesn’t really have a story line but the objective of the game is just continuous racing to get from the 150th position down to 1st position using a different variety of cars that are selectable on the way. The game has two modes; Single player and Online. The game also uses the Frostbite 2 Game Engine.

Another example is Gran Turismo 6. I have chosen this game because it’s a fun game to play and it’s also realistic with the features it has for example; you have a garage on the game and you can store many cars and you can also maintain the cars too. The game is licensed by Sony which means that it was only released for the PlayStation 3 and it was developed by Polyphony Digital.

Simulation:
A simulation game is a real life environment. These games are particularly good for training, analysis, or even prediction. There are no strict goals in the game as you can freely control a character. Simulation games range from different categories such as flight simulators, driving simulators, shooting simulators, surgeon simulators and the list goes on.

My chosen example is Euro Truck Simulator 2 because it’s a good example of a driving simulation game that was released back in 2012 for computer. The game consists of long distance driving doing deliveries and what makes the game so good is that you can purchase the steering wheel, pedals and the gear shifting kit to make the game more enjoyable. There is only a Single player mode to the game but there are hours and hours of deliveries. Since the release of the game, it has had good reviews and ratings. The game is a follow up from the first Euro Truck Simulator that was released back in 2008.

Another example is The SIMS 4. The reason for this choice is because it has been a popular game since it's first release back in 2000. It's a single player simulation game that allows you to create your own custom character and control it in many different ways. The series of these games have been released on the Windows and Mac OS X platform. The earlier games were also released on the Nintendo DS.

Sports:
A sports game emulates the physical sport with the feel of actually being there. Games like this can help hand-eye co-ordination and most importantly, the development of the brain.

My chosen example for a sports game is Wii Sports. This is a basic simulation game that has a lot of mini-games on it like baseball, tennis, boxing and golf. Wii Sports is only available on the Nintendo Wii, hence the name of the game. It was released back in 2006 just after when the Nintendo Wii console was released. It has a single player mode and a multiplayer mode which makes the game fun.

Another example is Wii Sports Resort. The reason I have chosen this game is because it is similar to the previous version, Wii Sports. This version of Wii Sports includes different sports such as; swordplay, wakeboarding, Frisbee, archery, basketball, table tennis, golf, bowling, power cruising, canoeing, cycling and air sports including parachuting and piloting. This game is only available on the Nintendo Wii, hence the name of the game. This version of Wii Sports was released in 2009 and it was released with the Black version of the Nintendo Wii.

Music:
A music game challenges the player to follow a set sequence of notes or movement. Most games require an input to follow the set sequence. These type of games are good for hand-eye co-ordination. There are different music games that are like this such as Rock Band, Frets on Fire, Guitar Hero and the list goes on.

My chosen example is Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock because it’s a good example of a music style game. The aim of the game is get through single player by completing a setlist of songs that are set by each boss and you can choose the difficulty you want to play the song on. You have the choice of Easy, Medium, Hard and Expert. The game has two modes; Single player and Online. You can play each song by yourself or you can play as a band (drums, bass and vocals) and it’s the same for single player.

Another good example for this genre is Rock Band is because it’s a similar game to the Guitar Hero series. The games have the same concept of completing the songs by hitting the sequence of notes displayed on the screen. Both Rock Band and Guitar Hero series were developed by the same people, Harmonix whereas the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 2 version of the game were developed by Pi Studios. Rock Band is available on the following platforms; PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360. The game was first released back in 2011 and the series of games have just spiralled out of control since the release of the first Rock Band.

Adventure:
An adventure game is all about using your initiative in the game. Throughout playing the game, the story will change because it will depend on what form of action you take. You may get asked a question in the game and there will be either two or four options there and whichever option you choose, it will alter the story which will result in multiple
different endings. These type of games test how smart you are and what kind of thinker you are as well.

My chosen example is The Walking Dead: Telltale Games Series. This is a perfect example of what an adventure game is like because it's full of multiple choice questions and it doesn't matter which one you choose, it will change the story line and it might not even be detectable until the game progress is high.

Another good example for this genre is L.A. Noire, a classic game developed by Rockstar. The story of this game doesn't change dramatically but when playing the game taking a case, you have the choice to either believe them, doubt them or even accuse them of lying. That's what makes the game so good because you make the decisions and each case depends on your decision.

Arcade:
This genre usually applies to the older generation of games. These type of games usually don't have a storyline, they just consist of many levels. The main objective of the game is to complete all of the levels with a large amount of points. Some examples of this genre are; Tetris, Pac-Man, Ms Pac-Man and the list goes on.

My chosen example is Pac-Man. This is a good example of a classic arcade game that was released back in the 1980's. The main objective of this game was to go around each board, collect the dots and escape the ghosts. This was repetitive all the way through each level and the game only had 256 levels but only 255 levels could be completed due to the last level had a software bug.

Another good example of an arcade game is Space Invaders. This game didn't have a storyline, just an objective which was to shoot aliens that shooting you in order to achieve a highscore in the game. The game was released in 1978 and it consisted of two modes; Single player and Two-player alternating.

Platform:
This genre usually involves the characters in the game to jump over obstacles or even between suspended platforms. These type of games are usually known as freerunners, platformers and jumping puzzles.

My chosen example is Super Mario Bros because this is a good example of a platform game. The game was first released back in 1985 by Nintendo on the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), Game Boy and then later re-released on the Nintendo Wii, Game Boy Advance and the Nintendo Wii U. This game has a smooth scrolling background when the main character is moved.

Another good example of a platform game is Donkey Kong. This game was also released by Nintendo back in 1981, four years before Super Mario Bros. The main objective of Donkey Kong was to get to the top of the board avoiding the barrels that were thrown down by Donkey Kong himself.

Puzzle:
This genre usually consists of many tests to the person such as; problem solving skills, logical thinking, pattern recognition, sequence solving and even word completion.

My chosen example for this genre is Tetris because it is a classic arcade game that has the same objective of Pac-Man, which was the go through each level and achieve a high score. Tetris doesn't have a storyline, it just consists of blocks being put together without overflowing the board in order to rank up the highscores. The game was released for the following platforms; Game Boy, NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), PlayStation, Sega Genesis and the Commodore 64.

Another example of a puzzle game is Dr. Mario. This game is similar to Tetris but the objective of this game is to drop the capsules in the jar to fight the populating viruses that are already in the jar. The game was released back in 1990 by Nintendo and the game also consists of a single player and a multiplayer mode. The game is on the following platforms; NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), Nintendo VS. System, PlayChoice 10, Game Boy, Satellaview, Nintendo Power, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Wii U.

My game sketch (Task 3 / 4)

What is my game and what is it about?:
The game that I have been asked to make is a two-dimensional platform game with my own choice of style.

In my game, I have chosen to have five different characters that the player changes into each level. The objective for the player is to destroy the enemies. If the enemies collide with the player, the player dies because of the reaction between them relate to a real life matter. You play as a carbonated drink in the game, the enemies are Mentos, and you have to destroy them using the carbonation from the drink. As you progress through the game, enemies difficulty increases until you get to the boss level, where there is a giant Mento that you have to destroy. If it doesn't get destroyed or you get hit by the small Mentos it produces, you will die but you won't have to start from the first level.

How does the game work? (The controls etc...):
For the game, the controls are quite simple. You use the left and right arrow keys to move the player left and right. You use the up arrow key to jump and the space bar to shoot to destroy the enemies.

How many levels?:
The game consists of five levels; four of them are normal playable levels and the fifth level is a boss level.

The visual style of my game:

After looking at various scrolling games with similar objectives as mine, The Super Mario Bros game came the closest for the representation of the game that I have made.

I have used this image from Super Mario Bros for the inspiration to make my own game. My game has a similar objective but not so many levels, such as Super Mario Bros, which does consist of many levels to complete in different worlds.

The view point of the game:
The game that I have made is not a scrolling game, but it consists of different obstacles the player has to avoid.

The game sketch:

This is the character sketch for my two dimensional platform game. It shows the characters that will be used in my game.

This image represents the concept for the first level in my game. Each level will have a different layout and also, there is an indicator to let you know what level you are playing on.
